10 Signs Your Rhinoplasty Doctor isn’t the right one

You’ve probably developed a list of red flags or major dealbreakers that will motivate you to end a friendship or romantic relationship based on years of experience. But what about your less-publicized but very personal relationship with your rhinoplasty doctor? If you’ve been seeing the same doctor for a while but are beginning to suspect something isn’t quite right, trust your instincts. It could simply mean you need to have a difficult conversation with them, or it could mean it’s time to call it quits.

We’ve compiled a list of 10 signs that you and your rhinoplasty doctor is no longer a good fit.

You feel pressured to get more procedures or facial aesthetic/cosmetic products

When you visit a plastic surgeon for a consultation, it is his or her responsibility to recommend the procedure that will provide you with the most benefit. In some cases, a surgeon may recommend chin surgery or chin filler or an implant instead of or in addition to rhinoplasty to improve your facial features. The features of your chin can affect how your nose appears on your face.

However, there are times when surgeons will try to upsell or convince you to have more surgeries such as a neck lift or procedures than you require, all in the name of improving the bottom line. Be wary of a surgeon who encourages you to try facial Botox or an injection when you inquire about rhinoplasty or to repair a breathing issue, or who continues to push various procedures after you’ve stated that you’re not interested.

After all, aesthetics is a business, and providers are frequently trying to recoup the money they’ve spent on new lasers, body contouring devices, and skin care. That’s understandable, but their business needs should never come at the expense of your budget and comfort level. Of course, they’d like to keep you up to date on their latest and greatest offerings, but there’s a difference between education and a hard sell that you feel you can’t refuse.

They are never on time or you feel rushed

The consultation with your surgeon is similar to going on a first date. It’s a chance for you to get to know each other and decide whether proceeding with the surgery is a good idea. Your surgeon should, at the very least, take the initial consultation seriously and be able to answer any questions you have.

It is a two-way street when it comes to asking and answering questions during a consultation. If your surgeon isn’t asking you questions, it’s usually a red flag. He or she will need to know your medical history in order to determine if you are a good candidate for the surgery, as well as what you hope to gain from the procedure.

No doctor is completely on time. Patients arrive late for appointments, treatments take longer than expected, emergencies arise, and life happens. That being said, if your provider is consistently running late and/or making you feel rushed during the appointment you’ve patiently waited for, it’s a sign that they’re too overworked and distracted to give you the attention you’re paying for.

You only see their nurse

Nurses, nurse practitioners, and physicians’ assistants are all highly qualified to provide many aesthetic services, but if you’re specifically booking with the doctor—and paying his or her rates—but end up seeing only a nurse or NP once you arrive at the office, it’s time to call it quits. Confirm that you will be seeing the doctor when you book the appointment, and if you aren’t, make sure you’re charged less—or find another doctor.

They post your photos online without your consent

Given the prevalence of social media these days, it’s easy to forget that there are still laws in place to protect your privacy when it comes to what your doctor can and cannot post. In a nutshell, they can’t post any photos or videos of you unless you explicitly give them permission to do so, which includes specifying exactly how your likeness will be used and what will be shared. When they do post, no personal information about you should be shared (unless you specifically ask them to tag you). So, if you see your before-and-after photos on their Instagram feed (or if they’re pressuring you to let them share your photos), take the road less traveled.

The surgeon isn’t board certified or has no demonstrable experience

The more procedures a surgeon performs, the better he or she will become at performing rhinoplasty. Look for a surgeon who not only has numerous surgeries under his or her belt, but also performs the procedure on a regular basis, at least several times per week.

You should also look for a surgeon who has performed the type of rhinoplasty you want. If you’re having a revision rhinoplasty, to fix a fracture or a deviated septum or an ethnic nose correction, you should go to a doctor who has done secondary or revision procedures before. The approach is slightly different from a primary rhinoplasty, since the structure of the nose was changed before, the surgeon may need to use a graft or cartilage for reshaping rather than a closed reconstructive surgery. Whether you are looking to change the function of your nose or the shape, you always deserve a doctor whose expertise you trust with your health.

Because let’s be honest, no matter the subject, training, and experience are only two components of becoming a qualified surgeon. You should also look for someone who has been board certified by an official medical board. Board certification confirms that the surgeon has completed a certain level of training and has demonstrated surgical ability as well as extensive medical knowledge. When speaking with a potential rhinoplasty surgeon, inquire about board certification, and then confirm that information with the appropriate board.

They charge you extra for controls

As you already know by now, post-op control appointment with your rhinoplasty doctor is the most important part after your surgery, and you shouldn’t need to pay for it as it is a part of the surgery. Patients can expect the external splint, pad and nasal tubes to be removed at this appointment. When these splints are removed, patients frequently experience immediate pressure relief as well as possibly improved breathing through their nose.

That’s why providers almost always tell patients that they can return in a week or several weeks for a free check-up—because happy patients with great results are the best advertisements for their business. However, if every minor change necessitates a new bill, it may be time to call it quits.

Their prices are always changing

Except for seasonal specials and package deals, your provider’s prices should not vary significantly from month to month. If the cost of your nose job surprises you every time you go to pay, it’s a red flag that you’re being taken advantage of. Honest providers want to build trust with their regular patients, so they will send out an email announcing a new pricing model before it takes effect.

You can’t reach your surgeon after the operation

Nobody likes to think about complications, but they can happen even with minor procedures. And the last thing you want if one does appear (even if it is minor) is to be unable to contact your provider. Yes, answering machines and automated messages are common, but if they don’t get back to you quickly or at all, that’s a problem. You want a provider who feels obligated to ensure your safety and well-being following any type of treatment, even if it’s just a question about your after rhinoplasty swelling

You don’t like how they make you feel or look

When you make an appointment with an aesthetician, it’s usually to address an issue that’s bothering you, whether it’s lines across your brow or years of sunspots. Your provider’s role is to assess the problem and recommend the best solution, not to shame you for your previous tanning-bed addiction or to say that “the pandemic has taken a toll on you.”

It only takes one traumatic or painful experience to instill fear that lasts a lifetime and is difficult to overcome. Whatever the reasons, if you’ve told your provider that you’re afraid of needles, local anesthesia, or even just sitting in a doctor’s chair, and they don’t offer ways to make you feel more at ease, it’s time to find someone who will.

This should go without saying, but the ultimate goal of any aesthetic treatment is to make you feel better about your appearance. You should be happy with how you look after the fact, whether it’s addressing a major insecurity or simply making a small tweak that no one but you will notice. If you aren’t, it doesn’t necessarily imply that your provider isn’t good, but you might have a better experience and be more satisfied with someone else.

They promise what they can’t deliver

Plastic surgery does not allow for all possibilities. Before committing to the procedure, both the surgeon and the patients must have reasonable, realistic expectations. Be wary if a surgeon makes grand claims about the outcome of your surgery, such as telling you that you’ll look like a certain celebrity or that the surgery will make you look perfect, without informing of the risks.

No facial surgery will make you perfect, and a responsible surgeon should not raise your expectations. If what the doctor promises sound impossible or more than you could possibly expect, you should seek the advice of someone who has a more realistic perspective on what rhinoplasty can and cannot do for you.
