Preparing your tooth for a crown usually requires two visits. At the first visit, we will examine your tooth and the amount of decay to determine your risk of injury or infection. Sometimes a root canal or filling may be required before a dental crown. Once we decide that a dental crown is an appropriate course of treatment, the tooth will be numbed and filed down to prepare it for the crown. Next, our dentist will create an impression of your tooth using a paste-like material. Our office will then send this impression to a lab to fabricate your crown. However, you will not have an exposed tooth. In the interim, we will place a temporary crown to protect your tooth. On your second visit, we will numb the area, remove the temporary crown, and apply the permanent crown if everything looks and feels good. If your crown needs any changes in fit or appearance, you may need to come back for a third visit.

Sensitivity and tenderness around the crowned tooth should be expected for at least two days and may last as long as six weeks. You’ll still need to clean around the crowned tooth, but you should be gentle while the area is sensitive. You should avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods for at least 24 hours.

You should care for a crowned tooth the way you would care for your natural teeth. Just because your tooth has a crown on it doesn’t mean it’s safe from tooth decay or gum disease. You’ll still need to brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss daily, and visit your dentist for regular check-ups.
